Fitted Home Offices in Crystal Palace
In Crystal Palace, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.
- Glare from a window on the screen
- No proper place to work from home
- Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
Fitted home offices designed for your room
Questions we are often asked
How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Crystal Palace?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Is Crystal Palace in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Crystal Palace is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
How long is the fitting for a home office?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?
Often, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We’ll check the size at the measuring visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Fitted home offices in Crystal Palace
Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Crystal Palace. If your home has a desk buried under papers and shelves that sag under books and files, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
How often you work from home shapes the design. For a home in Crystal Palace, full-time use might call for a full wall of desk and storage, and part-time use for a compact desk that closes away. That is part of the conversation at the design visit.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a written quote for the office.
- We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Tips worth knowing
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Note the position of sockets in the room
- Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
- Think about what you’d like on show
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. That way, you can start work right away.
A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Pushing it in gently helps. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
Built-in desks and shelving in Crystal Palace
In the streets around Crystal Palace, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 19 entries within half a mile of the centre of Crystal Palace. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Crystal Palace. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Living in a block of flats near Crystal Palace station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Crystal Palace Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can close over shelves, files or a printer. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. At the end of the day, work can be closed away.
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
