Furzedown Window Seats
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make window seats for homes in Furzedown, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
- A bay window that is hard to furnish
- Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
Window seats designed for your room
Window seats in Furzedown
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you don’t have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in Furzedown, we’ll help you choose. If you’re living with looking for a reading spot by the window and a period room that needs furniture to suit it, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Furzedown, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
From workshop to your room
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- You let us know about the window and the room, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
- We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters.
- We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a quote in writing.
- The seat is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
- We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
Before we arrive
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

What it’s made from
Pull-out drawers
Drawers under a window seat are easy to reach, even with a cushion on top. They suit toys, books and things you use often. Each drawer is sized for the space.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for the frame, the seat and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
For a straight window with no radiator, a ready-made bench can do the job. A bespoke seat earns its place where there is a bay, a radiator or a need for storage. We are happy to give an honest view during the design visit. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

Making use of awkward spaces in Furzedown
About 65% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Furzedown went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Furzedown. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Furzedown is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Questions from Furzedown
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Tooting station?
Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.
Does a conservation area in or near Furzedown affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Which materials go into your window seats?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?
Yes. We set the seat below the cill, so the sash still works. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit.
Before and after fitting day
People planning window seats often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Choose a colour that suits the room
- Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is normally all it needs. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge picks up marks first.
Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. It will look better for longer with a little care.
