The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes

For an older house near All Saints' Hampton, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

About our walk-in wardrobes in Hampton

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and a side each for a couple.

Around Hampton, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Hampton

In the neighbourhood around Hampton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Hampton, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 46% of households in the area around Hampton live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For a family home near Hampton Infant School and Nursery, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Strawberry Hill House, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Hampton

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hampton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Hampton?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Hampton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
