Wall beds for your home in Hanworth

About our wall beds in Hanworth

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a home office that also sleeps guests.

If you live in one of the post-war homes around Hanworth, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Where there is not much space in front, a careful layout helps everything fit. Concrete and blockwork walls need fixings chosen for them.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it helps to tell us during the design visit.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Do you need wall beds in Hanworth?

The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • More floor space in a studio flat

For a flat near Hampton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Bedroom storage in Hanworth

About 35% of the homes in the streets around Hanworth went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 31% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Hanworth is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hanworth Road Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Richmond upon Thames included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Hanworth. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

For an older house near St Richard's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live near Crane Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Common questions about wall beds

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Hampton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We measure this at the design visit and plan the layout around it.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How much does a wall bed cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, which suits some homes. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which matters in a small room. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, message us from the contact page.
