Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. We look at the sockets when we visit in Highbury. Typical reasons to get in touch are a guest room that’s needed for work and an awkward space with no furniture that fits; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Highbury, the spare room in a period house is often small, with a sash window and a chimney breast. Home offices can make that room work, with the desk under the window or across an alcove. Cable routes are planned so they run neatly to the sockets, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the home office designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

Common questions about fitted home offices

How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Highbury?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canonbury station?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. We plan around the headroom, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.

How is a home office priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

What materials do you use for home offices?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.

Built-in desks and shelving in Highbury

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Highbury were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Highbury, Historic England’s list includes Union Chapel (Grade I), about 0.6 miles south-west, and Canonbury Tower (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Highbury (about 50%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In older houses, an alcove or a small back bedroom often makes a good place for a built-in desk.

If you live near Highbury Fields, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For families living near Highbury Quadrant Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so home offices are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It helps to let us know about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The desk and shelving are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • Choose a calm colour for a working room
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is typically all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, get in touch through our contact form and tell us.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. The kitchen table works for a while, then it doesn’t. A fitted home office gives work a proper place.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Working at the kitchen table
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • A desk buried under papers
  • A room with two jobs to do

Living in a block of flats near Canonbury station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
