Loft storage in Highbury
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Highbury, we will see what fits. If your home has furniture that can’t get up to the loft and low eaves that nobody can use, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Highbury are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard furniture doesn’t allow for the insulation and ventilation behind the eaves. We plan the storage around what’s behind the knee wall. It helps keep the space in good order. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

How fitting works for loft storage
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so eaves cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- First you let us know about the loft room and what you’d like to store there.
- We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and discuss the design, including the headroom under the slope.
- A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
- Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- The storage is fitted in the loft and checked, door by door.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Arranging a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Highbury
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Highbury were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Highbury, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 50% of homes in the streets around Highbury were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded.
For families living near Highbury Quadrant Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. For an older house near Christ Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. Sutton House, about 2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
- Check the route up to the loft
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything isn’t right with the storage, drop us a line using the contact form and we will talk it through.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, send us a few details through our contact form and describe it.
Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Highbury?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Highbury?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
