Questions we are often asked

Is Finsbury in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Finsbury is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

My home in Finsbury is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

New sockets need an electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Which materials go into your home offices?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, and the low space under the slope can hold storage. We don’t carry out loft conversions.

Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. It is one of the first things we look at in Finsbury. If your home has a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and working at the kitchen table, home offices made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Big windows in newer homes bring plenty of light, and sometimes glare on a screen, so the desk position is worth thinking about. Around Finsbury, many homes were built since 2000. A desk side-on to the window often works best.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Working from home in Finsbury

About 36% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Finsbury went up since 2000, and about 33% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 322 entries within half a mile of the centre of Finsbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and home offices can be designed to work around them. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Finsbury is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Mansion House, about 0.6 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Giles, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Finsbury is about 2 miles north of Highbury, in the London Borough of Islington. Homes in Finsbury are part of the area we cover for fitted home offices, as part of our work in every London borough. We cover places right across Islington, large and small.

We work across EC1V, N1 and EC2A. We cover homes on streets such as Oat Lane, Long Lane and Love Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want fitted home offices or another piece made for the room. Finsbury sits close to the A1 and A501. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Finsbury: St Luke's (1 mile north), Barbican Estate (1 mile south), City of London (1 mile south), Bishopsgate (1 mile south-east) and Shoreditch (1 mile east). We also make fitted home offices in nearby places such as Highbury (2 miles north), Barnsbury (2 miles north-west), Holloway (3 miles north-west), Mildmay (2 miles north), Upper Holloway (3 miles north-west) and Nag's Head (3 miles north-west). Finsbury is among the bigger places we cover in Islington.

The streets we cover here include those near The Jugged Hare pub, Barts Health Archives and Charterhouse Square School, among other places. Finsbury has its own railway station: Old Street station. Nearby you’ll also find Montfichet's Tower (0.7 miles south-west) and St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics (a few minutes’ walk north-east). Not far away are Ludgate Hill.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps on a well-used desk.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For the painted parts of a home office, moisture-resistant MDF is a sound choice. It holds its shape and takes paint well. It works with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

The problems fitted home offices solve

People also want an office that looks good on video calls. Built-in shelves and doors give a tidy backdrop. It’s a practical benefit many people mention.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • No proper place to work from home
  • A room with two jobs to do
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk

For a flat near Old Street station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What fitted home offices can’t fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Building a loft conversion, which is not our work
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so tell us what applies during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
