Fitted home offices in Upper Holloway
Light matters in a home office. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. It’s one of the first things we look at in Upper Holloway. Typical reasons to get in touch are files and folders piling up and no way to put work away; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a bay window in the front room, while the recesses beside the chimney breast take shelving. Around Upper Holloway, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, a front room like that can become a study without losing its character. Each piece follows the walls rather than a straight line.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.
- It starts when you get in touch about a home office.
- We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use, and plan where the cables will run.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- Your office furniture is made at our workshop, sized for the room, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
How to get a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Upper Holloway
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upper Holloway?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Is Upper Holloway in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London, and Upper Holloway is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, in a loft that is already converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself is not our work.
Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?
That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. We will look at the options at the measuring visit.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What it costs
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The internal fittings
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What we need to know
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Any ideas or images you have saved

How it is made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits desks, panels and doors alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
