What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Wall beds for homes in Highbury

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. By day, the room is a living space; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above, so the whole wall works hard. Typical reasons to get in touch are room for a desk and a guest bed and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Highbury date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Do you need wall beds in Highbury?

Plenty of spare rooms have become home offices. People want a desk by day and a bed for visitors, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.

People typically get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed

For a flat near Canonbury station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Why bespoke in Highbury?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They come in set sizes and finishes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Wall beds for homes in Highbury

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Highbury were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Highbury is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Highbury fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live near Highbury Fields, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make wall beds for a home in Highbury?

Yes, Highbury is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Highbury?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

It depends on the design. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Is a wall bed safe?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How fitting works for wall beds

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
