How we make fitted home offices for Monkhams

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, shaped by the way you work. For a home in Monkhams, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Most enquiries start with flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and a corner too odd for a standard desk; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Monkhams, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Or a desk can sit in an alcove or a bay.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Monkhams

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monkhams?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Monkhams affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. They can then be fitted where we’ve allowed for them.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Monkhams?

Yes, we do. We work in Monkhams and across Redbridge, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

Which materials go into your home offices?

Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Long shelves are sized to carry books and files without sagging. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Where is the furniture made?

It is built in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Converting a loft to make room for an office

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What to send when you contact us

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Do you need fitted home offices in Monkhams?

Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. With doors over the desk, work can be put away at the end of the day. It makes the house feel like home again in the evening.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • Working at the kitchen table

For families living near Wells Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
