Monkhams Loft Storage

In Monkhams, we design loft storage around the room you actually have. Your eaves cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

Loft storage designed for your room

How we price loft storage

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Loft storage in Monkhams: what you get

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. For a home in Monkhams, it is planned around your things. If you’re living with a dormer that isn’t being used and boxes piled on loft boards, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Monkhams, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions from Monkhams

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monkhams?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Monkhams?

Yes, Monkhams is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. The angled fronts match the ceiling, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

What prompts loft storage in Monkhams

A dormer can feel like wasted space. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It adds storage without crowding the room.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • A dormer that is not being used
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made wardrobes and cupboards are built for standard rooms. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is the space it uses. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight

Fitted storage in Monkhams

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Monkhams, with about 31% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Monkhams, Historic England’s list includes Main Quadrangle (Grade II), under half a mile north, and Church of All Saints' (Grade II), under half a mile south. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 33% of homes in the area around Monkhams were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

For families living near Wells Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a flat close to Highams Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
