How we make fitted home offices for East Sheen

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in East Sheen. People normally come to us about an alcove or landing that could take a desk and glare from a window on the screen; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around East Sheen, the spare room in a period house is often small, with a sash window and a chimney breast. A built-in desk, shelving and closed storage can fit even a modest room. Cable routes are planned so they run neatly to the sockets, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

FAQs: fitted home offices in East Sheen

I live near Mortlake station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in East Sheen?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

That is work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. They can then be fitted where we have allowed for them.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Converting a loft to make room for an office
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Do you need fitted home offices in East Sheen?

Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. The kitchen table works for a while, then it does not. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • No proper place to work from home
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

A standalone desk can go with you when you move. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Working from home in East Sheen

In the area around East Sheen, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of East Sheen, Historic England’s list includes Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east, and Hare and Hounds Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Around East Sheen, about 58% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Richmond upon Thames as a whole, about 38%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

For a family home near Thomson House School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If you live in a flat close to Mortlake station, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
