Fitted home offices in Putney Vale
Why bespoke in Putney Vale?
Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Ready-made pieces each bring their own height and depth, and a room full of them can look cluttered, while one fitted run looks calm and uses the space better. It can be painted to suit the room.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Fitted home offices in Putney Vale: what you get
Light matters in a home office. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early during the design visit in Putney Vale. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a tangle of chargers and leads and a screen that’s hard to read by the window.
Wide windows are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, and a desk running beneath one makes the most of the daylight. If there is a radiator below, the desk sits clear so the heat can rise. With many of the homes around Putney Vale built in the post-war decades, it’s a layout worth considering.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
The problems fitted home offices solve
Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. A kitchen table or a corner of the bedroom soon stops working. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
- Wires with no tidy route
- No proper place to work from home
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Dorich House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Before you choose who makes it
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
Pull-out drawers
A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. Leave knee room in the middle. The design visit settles the layout.
Questions from Putney Vale
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Putney Vale?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Putney Vale is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Which materials go into your home offices?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
That comes down to the size of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We’ll tell you honestly when we visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so it’s useful to tell us at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the space.
- We come to measure and work out where the desk, shelves and cable routes should go. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
- You receive a written quote for the office we have discussed, for you to read through.
- The desk, shelving and cupboards are made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work, with cable routes left clear.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
