Fitted home offices for homes in Roehampton

Light matters in a home office. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early during the design visit in Roehampton. Most enquiries start with files and folders piling up and no way to put work away; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wide windows are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, which suit a desk set along the window wall. If there is a radiator below, the desk sits clear so the heat can rise. With many of the homes around Roehampton built in the post-war decades, it’s a layout worth considering.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a home office.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. It suits desks, long shelves and drawer boxes. The edge can be left on show or painted.

How we price fitted home offices

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Getting in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Fitted home offices in Roehampton: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Roehampton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Roehampton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 65% of households in the area around Roehampton, based on Census 2021. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Near listed buildings like Roehampton House (at Queen Mary's Hospital), under half a mile south-west of the centre of Roehampton, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Putney Heath, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For a family home near Granard Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Roehampton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Roehampton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We’ll check the size at the design visit.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

How is a home office priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
