Sundridge Wall Beds

Planning wall beds for a home in Sundridge? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

How we make wall beds for Sundridge

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so the mattress you choose fits. Most enquiries start with room for a desk and a guest bed and a playroom that can sleep visitors, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Fitted furniture in a bedroom has to work with how you use the room. Whatever your home in Sundridge is like, the first question at the measuring visit is what the room needs to do. The layout, the doors and the inside follow from that. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted, in a colour agreed with you.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Sundridge?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near Sundridge Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How are wall beds priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Wall beds in Sundridge: local notes

About 33% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Sundridge went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Garden Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Sundridge. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. The share of homes built before 1919 around Sundridge, about 33%, is well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of wall beds.

For a flat near Sundridge Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Bromley Palace, about 0.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
