Upper Holloway Fitted Wardrobes

For homes in Upper Holloway, we make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do

Fitted wardrobes in Upper Holloway

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. People typically come to us about dusty space on top of the wardrobe and mismatched bedroom furniture; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around Upper Holloway, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

When you need someone else

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Structural changes to the room

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hand-painted finish

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Bedrooms in Upper Holloway: local notes

About 59% of the homes in the streets around Upper Holloway went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Upper Holloway is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 44% of households in the neighbourhood around Upper Holloway, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live in a flat close to Upper Holloway station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's Whitehall Park, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. The wider area includes historic houses like Witanhurst, about 0.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Hanging rails

A long rail needs a support in the middle to carry a full load. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Upper Holloway

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Upper Holloway is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is Upper Holloway in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, Upper Holloway is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
