Wall beds in Upper Holloway
Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Why us?

Wall beds for homes in Upper Holloway
The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about room for a desk and a guest bed and a spare room that’s rarely slept in.
Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around Upper Holloway are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What we don’t do
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Making good the walls after other work
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
- Structural work to the wall or floor
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Spray-painted finish
- Fold-down bed mechanism
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
What happens on fitting day
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.
- You tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and talk through the bed, the storage and the finish.
- A written quote follows.
- The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
