Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and stiff. Long spans need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We will suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. It’s one of the first things we look at in Upton. Typical reasons to get in touch are a guest room that’s needed for work and paperwork and files with nowhere to go, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

For occasional working, a small desk on a landing or under the stairs can be enough. Around Upton, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, a landing or the space below the stairs could hold a compact desk. Cupboards with doors keep files and the printer out of sight. Meters and fuse boards stay reachable.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design. It helps to let us know about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Estimate the shelf space you will need
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is typically all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Pushing it in gently helps. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Fitted home offices for homes in Upton

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Upton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Upton. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bexley has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Bexleyheath station? Then home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Red House, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Upton, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Danson Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Questions we are often asked

Is Upton in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London, and Upton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

That comes down to the size of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelves and storage around it. We measure and give an honest view during the design visit.
