Under-stairs storage in Upton, Bexley

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Upton starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

Under-stairs storage for your home in Upton

Fitted storage in Upton

In the area around Upton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Upton include Red House (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Christ Church Parish Church (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 61% of households in the area around Upton, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For families living near Upland Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If your home is one of the older houses near Trinity Baptist Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

How we make under-stairs storage for Upton

The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, whether that’s pull-out drawers, a run of cupboards or a mix of both. For a home in Upton, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. If you’re living with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Walls in houses from between the wars are typically straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around Upton is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Pull-out drawers

Deep drawers on runners let you use the low end of the space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. Many designs use a run of drawers stepping down with the stairs.

Questions we are often asked

Is Upton in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London, and Upton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, typically behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

In many homes it is possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Upton

When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • Cleaning things with no proper home

If you live in a flat close to Bexleyheath station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Choosing a carpenter

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

How to choose a carpenter in London

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
