Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Choose a calm colour for a working room
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Check whether you will need new sockets

Heavy files are best kept low or close to the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.

Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.

How we make fitted home offices for Blendon

Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. At the design visit in Blendon, we will see what fits. Most enquiries start with a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and shelves that sag under books and files; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Blendon, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a 1930s house, the small room over the stairs often becomes the study, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. A room that size can take a desk, shelves and cupboards.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Albany Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Blendon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What materials do you use for home offices?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Long shelves are sized to carry books and files without sagging. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Built-in desks and shelving in Blendon

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Blendon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 63%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Blendon, Historic England’s list includes Jays Cottages (Grade II), less than half a mile north, and Chapel House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bexley sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St James the Great, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Close to Danson Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. Living in a block of flats near Albany Park station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What affects the price in Blendon

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. First you let us know about the room and what your work needs.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, sized for the room and the route in.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use, with cable routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
