Wall beds in Upton

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a flexible room for a growing family.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Upton, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit wall beds and other fitted storage well.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Pricing wall beds in Upton

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Your postcode and the borough

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Common questions about wall beds

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Forest Gate station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

How fitting day works

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Advice on your lease
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish

Is it time for wall beds?

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

If you live in a flat close to Forest Gate station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Wall beds in Upton: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Upton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Upton include Church of St Antony and Monastery (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Red House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Newham included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Upton. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If your children go to Elmhurst Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near West Ham Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
