How we make fitted home offices for Custom House
An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Custom House or anywhere else. If your home has a laptop that moves from room to room and flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight, home offices made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Big windows in newer homes bring lots of light, and sometimes glare on a screen, so the desk position is worth thinking about. Many homes around Custom House date from 2000 onwards, and we look at the light during the design visit. A desk side-on to the window often works best.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitted home offices for homes in Custom House
In the neighbourhood around Custom House, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 64%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Custom House. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Purpose-built flats are more common around Custom House than across Newham: about 74% of households, against about 44%, based on Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.3 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Warehouse K, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Matthew's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
Custom House is in the London Borough of Newham, about 1 mile north of Plaistow. We cover Custom House as part of our work across Newham, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Newham.
We cover every part of E16 and E13. We cover homes on streets like Tree Road, Ethel Road and Booth Road, along with the roads around them, for fitted home offices and any of our other fitted furniture. The A1020 runs close to Custom House, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Nearby, we also make fitted home offices in West Silvertown (1 mile south-west), Silvertown (1 mile south), Canning Town (1 mile north), Royal Docks (1 mile east) and Limmo Peninsula (1 mile west). Across the rest of Newham, our area takes in Stratford (3 miles north-west), Forest Gate (3 miles north), East Ham (2 miles north-east), Upton Park (2 miles north), Maryland (3 miles north-west) and Upton (2 miles north).

How we price fitted home offices
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The overall size of the piece
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
Helping us understand the room
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Custom House
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Custom House station?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Custom House?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Custom House is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We measure and give an honest view during the design visit.
How much does a fitted home office cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, use our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It is made in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Note the position of sockets in the room
- Note how many files and books you need to store
Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.
Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Tight cables can mark edges over time. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.
Fitting day, step by step
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.
- First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Empty the space we will be working in
Starting with a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made office furniture comes in set sizes for straight walls. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. Bespoke furniture is made to the room and fits it. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
