Working from home in Upton Park
Homes built before 1919 make up about 69% of the housing in the streets around Upton Park, with about 11% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Upton Park, Historic England’s list includes Boleyn Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Passmore Edwards Library (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Terraced houses are home to about 43% of households in the neighbourhood around Upton Park, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have alcoves or a small back bedroom that can take a built-in desk.
Living in a block of flats near Woodgrange Park station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near West Ham Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 2.7 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.
Upton Park is in the London Borough of Newham, about 1 mile south-west of Plaistow. Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. At the design visit in Upton Park, we’ll see what fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves that sag under books and files and a desk buried under papers, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Victorian and Edwardian rooms often have fewer sockets than a modern office needs, so the desk is planned around where they are, with routes for cables built in. If you need more, that’s a job for your electrician before the furniture goes in. Since a large share of homes around Upton Park date from before 1919, it’s a common thing to plan for.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

How fitting day works
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
- We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
- A quote in writing follows.
- In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.
Before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
How to get a quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
What else we make in Upton Park
Before and after fitting day
Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
- Consider your chair when planning the desk
Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Upton Park
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Woodgrange Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Upton Park?
Yes. Upton Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Newham and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.
Why bespoke in Upton Park?
A standalone desk can go with you when you move. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What affects the price in Upton Park
What you pay depends on:
- The width and height of the space
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What to send when you contact us
When you contact us, these help most:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
How it’s made
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the desk, the carcasses and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the office. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
