Aldgate Loft Storage
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Aldgate starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Needing storage in a loft office
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- Boxes piled on loft boards

Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
How we make loft storage for Aldgate
Behind an eaves door, there is often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this at the design visit in Aldgate. Typical reasons to get in touch are nowhere to store bags and boxes and furniture that can’t get up to the loft, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A large number of homes around Aldgate date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Fitted storage in Aldgate
About 48% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Aldgate went up since 2000, and about 18% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 375 entries within half a mile of the centre of Aldgate. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 79% of households in the neighbourhood around Aldgate, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Living in a block of flats near London Fenchurch Street station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.5 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

FAQs: loft storage in Aldgate
Does a conservation area in or near Aldgate affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live in a flat in Aldgate. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
The problems loft storage solve
Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. The low spaces at the edge of a loft room are hard to use. Built-in storage makes that space useful.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Boxes piled on loft boards
- A loft room with too many jobs
- Unused space in a dormer
- A converted loft with no fitted furniture
Close to Finsbury Circus? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.
- You let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
- We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.
Before we arrive
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Pricing loft storage in Aldgate
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Parking near your home
- The number of doors and drawers
- The overall size of the piece
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
