Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

About our walk-in wardrobes in Aldgate

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. People usually come to us about room for a growing wardrobe and shelves for shoes and bags, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, so the remaining walls have to work harder. Many homes around Aldgate were built since 2000, and fitted furniture can use every part of the solid walls. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why us?

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Built around your room
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in an older home.

Shelves

Shoe shelves can be angled or flat, sized to what you own.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Think about long versus double hanging

We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. We plan the layout around your clothes, so a clear-out first gives a better design.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

I live in a flat in Aldgate. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aldgate?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How much time does fitting need?

It depends on the room. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Aldgate homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 48% of the housing in the streets around Aldgate, with about 18% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Lloyd's Avenue Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Aldgate. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Aldgate is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which covers the whole City of London. Access, loading and timings are planned with that in mind.

If your children go to The Aldgate School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Katherine Cree, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Aldgate?

Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it instead of a store for odds and ends.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • A side each for a couple
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe

Mansion House, about 0.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
