Loft storage for your home in Blackfriars
Loft storage in Blackfriars: what you get
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Blackfriars, we’ll see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are seasonal things cluttering the loft room and unused space in a dormer.
Many homes around Blackfriars date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. Post-war houses usually have space under the stairs that can do more, while flats tend to have hallways and recesses worth using. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Why bespoke in Blackfriars?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes often don’t fit up narrow loft stairs. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. A room without alcoves gives ready-made furniture nothing to sit into, so it stands out from the wall, whereas fitted furniture can make its own recesses and frame a window or door.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Why us?
- 300+ projects completed

Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
- Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. If there is an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. You’ll know it all works as it should.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, message us from the contact page and tell us.

What else we make in Blackfriars
Loft storage in Blackfriars: local notes
In the area around Blackfriars, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Blackfriars, 35 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The whole City of London, Blackfriars included, is inside the Congestion Charge zone. Deliveries and fitting days are planned with the zone’s rules and the City’s loading restrictions in mind.
Near listed buildings like Apothecaries Hall, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Blackfriars, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near London Blackfriars station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Bernie Spain Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

If you are just outside Blackfriars, we also cover Temple (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile west), Bankside (1 mile south-east), Smithfield (1 mile north) and Clare Market (1 mile west).

Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
From workshop to your room
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know beforehand helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.
- You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Questions we are often asked
My home in Blackfriars is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Blackfriars?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It uses the full height of the room. We will work out the layout when we visit.
