Loft storage in Smithfield, City of London

Loft storage in Smithfield: eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home.

  • A dormer that isn’t being used
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Low eaves that nobody can use

What loft storage can’t fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

About our loft storage in Smithfield

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in Smithfield, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If you are living with a loft room with too many jobs and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, eaves cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. Around Smithfield, where most households live in purpose-built flats, that is worth thinking about early. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting works for loft storage

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it is worth checking with the managing agent beforehand. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions from Smithfield

My home in Smithfield is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Farringdon station?

Yes, homes across the City of London and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Loft storage in Smithfield: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Smithfield were built since 2000 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 472 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Smithfield. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 32% of homes in the streets around Smithfield were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In a newer house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes can be used; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Bartholomew-the-Less, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. For families living near Charterhouse Square School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What prompts loft storage in Smithfield

Standard wardrobes don’t fit under a sloping ceiling. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It is a common need in a loft bedroom.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs

For a flat near Farringdon station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
