How we make loft storage for Clare Market

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Clare Market, we’ll see what fits. If you’re living with clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and nowhere to store bags and boxes, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Older homes like many around Clare Market have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around Clare Market date from then. Eaves cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Your questions about loft storage in Clare Market

Can you make loft storage for a home in Clare Market?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and Clare Market is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Clare Market affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

What affects the price in Clare Market

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Count the clothes you will need to hang

Keep the ventilation behind the eaves clear. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.
