Storage in Cricklewood homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Cricklewood, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Part of Cricklewood is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Cricklewood joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For an older house near St Gabriel's Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Gabriel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Cricklewood is part of the London Borough of Brent, about 1 mile south-east of Kilburn. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Cricklewood included. We list Cricklewood among 29 places we cover in Brent.

We make loft storage across NW2, NW6 and NW10 for loft storage. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Ivy Road, Walm Lane and Dean Road, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. Cricklewood is near the A407, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Other places close to Cricklewood include Brondesbury (1 mile south-east), Willesden (1 mile south-west), Dollis Hill (1 mile north-west), Willesden Green (1 mile south-west) and Neasden (1 mile west). Around Cricklewood

Our area takes in the homes around Hampstead School, Brondesbury College and The Crown Public House, among other places. Cricklewood has its own railway station: Cricklewood station. Well-known places in the area include St Andrew's Hospital (0.8 miles north-west) and Brent Museum and Archives (0.7 miles south-west). For a walk, there’s Westbere Copse.

About our loft storage in Cricklewood

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, all made for the shape of the room. In Cricklewood, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Most enquiries start with boxes piled on loft boards and no wardrobe that fits under the slope; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Cricklewood are that old. Eaves cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Your questions about loft storage in Cricklewood

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Cricklewood?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Cricklewood?

Yes, we work across Brent, Cricklewood included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly its fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. They’re cut to follow the angle of the ceiling.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

The problems loft storage solve

The most common reason is wasted space. Behind the knee walls, there’s space nobody can reach. Cupboards and drawers built into the knee wall put it to work.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • A loft room with too many jobs

For a family home near Anson Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays with the house, and it uses the slopes in a way a standalone piece can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Why us?

  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Scribed to uneven walls

How fitting works for loft storage

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
