Wall beds for your home in Cricklewood
Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Cricklewood affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cricklewood?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What does a wall bed cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Wall beds in Cricklewood
You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go when the bed is down. Most enquiries start with a living room with a bed that folds away and a home office that also sleeps guests; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Cricklewood are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Cricklewood
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Cricklewood were built before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Cricklewood is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 34% of households in the area around Cricklewood, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
For families living near Anson Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For a flat near Cricklewood station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Gabriel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so we build it with care. It’s fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.
Shelves
Open shelves soften a wall of cupboards and keep it from feeling heavy.
Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Pricing wall beds in Cricklewood
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The internal fittings
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The overall size of the piece
- How square the room is
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Getting in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Examples of the look you are after
- How you want to use the space
- Your postcode and the borough
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, use our contact form.
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
Preparing the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
How to get a quote

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
