Loft storage in Downe

Each eaves cupboard is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the carcasses and drawers their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s carried up and fitted in your home in Downe. If your home has boxes and suitcases with no home and a dormer that isn’t being used, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Downe, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Making use of tricky spaces in Downe

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Downe were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Downe. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. All of London, Bromley included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Downe fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Close to South Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. For a family home near Downe Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. In a loft room, standard pieces leave awkward gaps under the slope. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece cannot reach. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

What affects the price in Downe

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

FAQs: loft storage in Downe

Do you cover homes near Chelsfield station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Downe?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
