Loft storage in Hayes, Bromley

Loft storage in Hayes: eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts. We visit to measure and go through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can

Don’t pack things so tightly that air can’t move behind the knee wall. Leave the gaps we have designed in. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Temperatures in a loft room can swing more than elsewhere. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.

About our loft storage in Hayes

The space behind the knee wall usually has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. When we visit in Hayes, we’ll see what’s there. If your home has ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. Around Hayes, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft, and how you get up to it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made at our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Advice

Your questions about loft storage in Hayes

I live near Hayes (Kent) station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is Hayes in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Hayes included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?

We make the storage in sections sized for the route. At the design visit, we measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landings. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not when it is planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself isn’t ours.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the storage is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That suits a room in daily use.

Loft storage in Hayes: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 72% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hayes, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Hayes, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

If you live near Coney Hall Recreation Ground, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near Hawes Down Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Rectory, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
