Storage in Angel homes: local notes

About 39% of the homes in the area around Angel went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 9 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Angel. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Angel typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Close to Barnard Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a flat near London Kings Cross station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

How we make loft storage for Angel

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, all made for the shape of the room. In Angel, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If you’re living with no wardrobe that fits under the slope and a dormer that isn’t being used, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Most homes around Angel are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Pricing loft storage in Angel

The price for your room depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We visit to measure the eaves and slopes and discuss the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed, for you to look over.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

What prompts loft storage in Angel

Boxes, suitcases and seasonal things need a home. Cupboards behind the knee wall hide them away. The room stays calm and clear.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Sadler House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Your questions about loft storage in Angel

Is parking a problem for fitting in Angel?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Angel?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London, and Angel is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not when it’s planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We do not alter insulation or vents.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Count the clothes you will need to hang
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It helps to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.
