Loft storage in Clerkenwell: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Clerkenwell, with about 28% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 369 entries within half a mile of the centre of Clerkenwell. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

Living in a block of flats near Farringdon station? Then eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Clerkenwell is part of the London Borough of Islington, about 2 miles north of Highbury. Wherever you are in Clerkenwell, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Clerkenwell is one of 17 places on our list for Islington.

How we make loft storage for Clerkenwell

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route not just the room, so every section made in our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Clerkenwell. If your home has no wardrobe that fits under the slope and a boarded loft with no proper shelving, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Walls in a block of flats can be concrete, brick, block or plasterboard, sometimes all in one flat. Since most households around Clerkenwell live in purpose-built flats, each wall is checked before fixings are chosen. On a stud wall, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are tied back.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the eaves cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Altering the structure of the loft
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Angled fronts are cut to follow the slope, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Birch plywood

Drawers in the knee wall can carry heavy things, from boxes to bedding. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws well. It works well for longer shelves too.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard furniture doesn’t allow for the insulation and ventilation behind the eaves. Bespoke storage is designed so it doesn’t block ventilation or squash insulation. It helps keep the space in good order. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

FAQs: loft storage in Clerkenwell

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Clerkenwell?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Farringdon station?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, use our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Why people ask for loft storage in Clerkenwell

Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Cupboards behind the knee wall hide them away. It keeps the room tidy.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised

If you live in a period home close to St James's Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the loft.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and go through the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we’ve discussed.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, cut to the angle of the slope.
  5. The storage is fitted in the loft and checked, door by door.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
