How we make loft storage for Richmond

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. In Richmond, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If your home has boxes and suitcases with no home and furniture that can’t get up to the loft, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are usually solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Richmond, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Pricing loft storage in Richmond

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Boards, parts and paint

Pull-out drawers

The space behind a knee wall is deep and low, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. You see everything at once. We plan them around any access the eaves need.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It’s easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Richmond is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Richmond?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Richmond is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

How is loft storage priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Richmond homes and loft storage

In the area around Richmond, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 54%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Richmond is partly covered by the Richmond Hill Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you are not sure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Richmond upon Thames included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Richmond, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near The Vineyard Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. If your children go to The Vineyard School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, less than half a mile south of the centre of Richmond, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
