Walk-in wardrobes in Maypole: what you get

Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Maypole and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, followed by a quote. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about the right mix of long and short hanging and separate space for two people’s clothes.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around Maypole is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Store heavy things on lower shelves, and don’t overload a single rail. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. External walls can be colder and damper, and ventilation inside the units helps.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Walk-in wardrobes in Maypole: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 59% of the housing in the streets around Maypole, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Maypole. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bromley sets its own rules. Where a street in Maypole is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Lullingstone Castle, about 2.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your children go to Chelsfield Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Maypole?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Maypole is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Maypole?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
