Loft storage in Hackbridge

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, all made for the shape of the room. In Hackbridge, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If you’re living with a new loft conversion that needs storage and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Walls in houses from between the wars are typically straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Around Hackbridge, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Converting the loft itself, which is not our work
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

The problems loft storage solve

A boarded loft can be made far more useful with shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It suits seasonal things and boxes.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

If you live near Cranmer Green, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

What to check before you book

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We visit to measure the eaves and slopes and go through the design.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, cut to the angle of the slope. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft floors are often out of level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so everything opens and closes as it should.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits carcasses, drawer boxes and shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Hackbridge homes and loft storage

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hackbridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hackbridge. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 49% of homes in the neighbourhood around Hackbridge date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Base of Windmill at Mill House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mark's Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Common questions about loft storage

Do you cover homes near Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hackbridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. We design eaves storage so it doesn’t block ventilation or squash insulation. For worries about existing insulation or vents, ask the people who did the conversion.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
