Loft storage in Ruislip Gardens: what you get

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Ruislip Gardens. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised.

A good part of the housing around Ruislip Gardens is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind

Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Loft storage in Ruislip Gardens: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Ruislip Gardens were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 53%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Gardens. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Hillingdon included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Ruislip Gardens. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For an older house near Church of St Paul, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. For a family home near Ruislip High School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Close to Church Field Gardens? What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels, where the finish is most on show.

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

FAQs: loft storage in Ruislip Gardens

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ruislip Gardens?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is Ruislip Gardens in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, Ruislip Gardens is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your loft. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
