Loft storage in Hayes, Hillingdon
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Hayes starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- Needing storage in a loft office
Need loft storage in Hayes?
Loft storage in Hayes: what you get
A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. At the design visit in Hayes, we will look at what fits. People typically come to us about boxes piled on loft boards and wasted space behind the knee walls; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Hayes, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Angled fronts are cut to follow the slope, keeping the lines neat.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits angled panels and plain fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.
What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Ask for a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
What loft storage can’t fix
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Electrical work in the loft
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Fitted storage in Hayes
About 50% of the homes in the area around Hayes went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Hayes is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hayes Village Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 49% of households in the neighbourhood around Hayes, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 3 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Close to Barra Hall Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Questions from Hayes
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hayes?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Is Hayes in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes, Hayes is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No. We do not carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.
