Loft storage in Vale of Health

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Loft storage for homes in Vale of Health

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the carcasses and drawers their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is carried up and fitted in your home in Vale of Health. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about needing storage in a loft office and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.

A large share of the homes around Vale of Health were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That is where fitted storage comes in, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Doors and drawer fronts

The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. They’re cut to follow the angle of the ceiling.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit loft storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Vale of Health?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Vale of Health?

Yes. Vale of Health is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, the conversion itself isn’t our work. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

How is loft storage priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Making use of awkward spaces in Vale of Health

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Vale of Health were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Vale of Health, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. About 36% of households in the area around Vale of Health live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Heath House, about 0.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. Close to Hampstead Heath? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
