Questions from Vale of Health

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Vale of Health?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

My home in Vale of Health is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What if I buy a larger TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV so the unit suits your next set. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Will the cables be hidden?

We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with access panels for later changes. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, so it helps to plan sockets with your electrician.

TV and media units in Vale of Health

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in. Most enquiries start with games, controllers and remotes everywhere and boxes and consoles on the floor; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. That matters around Vale of Health, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

For a family home near Christ Church Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses like Heath House, about 0.1 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Hampstead Heath station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought media units are made in set widths, so gaps are common. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

Why choose us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

Ask for a quote

Plinths and scribe strips
