Loft storage in Bloomsbury
How we make loft storage for Bloomsbury
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Bloomsbury, we will see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and no wardrobe that fits under the slope.
Most homes around Bloomsbury are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
- Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
- Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. A quick sort every so often helps. Heavy boxes are best kept low.
How fitting works for loft storage
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
- At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Storage in Bloomsbury homes: local notes
In the area around Bloomsbury, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 448 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bloomsbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Bloomsbury, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
If your home is one of the older houses near St George the Martyr Holborn, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. Close to Lincoln's Inn Fields? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Bloomsbury is within the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras. Whether your home in Bloomsbury is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. In Camden, Bloomsbury is one of the places we cover.
We cover every part of the NW1W, W1T and NW1 postcode area for loft storage. You will find streets here like Drury Lane, Euston Road and Duke's Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for loft storage. Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in Hampstead (3 miles north-west), West Hampstead (3 miles north-west), Kentish Town (2 miles north-west), Greenhill (3 miles north-west), Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west) and Dartmouth Park (3 miles north).
Local landmarks in Bloomsbury
Our area takes in the homes around Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ, Queens Larder Public House and Pilsudski Institute of London, among other places. For rail, the closest station is London Euston station, about 0.6 miles north-west. Other landmarks nearby include National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (a few minutes’ walk south-east) and Montfichet's Tower (1.2 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Barnsbury Wood and St. James's Park Lake.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Common questions about loft storage
Do you cover homes near London Euston station?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make loft storage for homes in Bloomsbury?
Yes. Bloomsbury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What do eaves cupboards cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How it is made
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
