Loft storage in North End: local notes
In the streets around North End, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of North End, Historic England’s list includes The Hill Garden Central Temple Summerhouse (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and The Hill Garden Western Summerhouse (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Camden included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in North End. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Hampstead Heath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Childs Hill Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
North End is about 4 miles south-east of St Pancras, part of the London Borough of Camden. Wherever you are in North End, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. North End is one of the places in Camden where we make loft storage.
Here we cover the NW3, NW11 and N2 postcode area for loft storage. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Sandy Road, Park Avenue and Platt's Lane, along with the roads around them, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. The A502 run close to North End, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Other places close to North End include Vale of Health (1 mile south-east), Childs Hill (1 mile south-west), Golders Green (1 mile north-west), Greenhill (1 mile south) and West Hampstead (1 mile south). Elsewhere in Camden, we also cover St Pancras (4 miles south-east), West End (4 miles south-east), St Giles (4 miles south-east), Seven Dials (4 miles south-east), Holborn (4 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (4 miles south-east).

Loft storage in North End: what you get
Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It is part of the job for any loft room in North End. People usually come to us about a new loft conversion that needs storage and boxes piled on loft boards, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around North End, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

FAQs: loft storage in North End
Do you cover homes near Hampstead Heath station?
Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Does eaves storage affect the insulation?
Not if it’s planned with care. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. For worries about existing insulation or vents, ask the people who did the conversion.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Which materials go into your loft storage?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can act as a shelf. We agree the layout during the design visit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes often don’t fit up narrow loft stairs. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
- We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

What affects the price in North End
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Helping us understand the room
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Is it time for loft storage?
A sloping ceiling makes a standard wardrobe impossible. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It’s often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.
Requests we hear often include:
- A dormer that is not being used
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- A converted loft with no fitted furniture
- Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
Heath House, about 0.3 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
