TV and media units across Barking and Dagenham: what to expect
In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. Most enquiries start with leads that show from every angle and speakers muffled behind doors; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
- We send a written quote.
- In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
What goes into your quote
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Starting with a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

TV and media units for homes across Barking and Dagenham
If you are in one of the older streets of Barking and Dagenham, expect walls that lean and floors that dip, which is why every piece is trimmed to the wall on site. In newer homes across Barking and Dagenham, the challenge is more often a plasterboard wall, which needs the right fixings.
In Barking and Dagenham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 50% of homes in Barking and Dagenham date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both. About 42% of households in Barking and Dagenham live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, which suit TV and media units built to their exact widths.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Barking: For an older house near St Patrick's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a flat near Barking station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What affects the price in Barking and Dagenham
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How square the room is
- How big the furniture is
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
What to send when you get in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What the furniture needs to hold
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Where other trades come in
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed before we start.
Shelves
Each shelf is planned for what will sit on it.
Questions we’re often asked
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
