Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Dagenham?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Dagenham Dock station?
Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.
TV and media units for homes in Dagenham
Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Most enquiries start with equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and clutter around the TV, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Dagenham, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Living-room carpentry in Dagenham: local notes
In the streets around Dagenham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 66%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Dagenham, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter and St Paul (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and The Vicarage (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. All of London, Barking and Dagenham included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Dagenham. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
If your children go to Village Infants' School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Rainham Hall, about 2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live near Beam Valley Country Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Dagenham is about 3 miles west of Barking, in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. From period terraces to newer flats in Dagenham, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Barking and Dagenham, large and small.

Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits shelves for heavy speakers and amplifiers.
Shelves
Shelves are sized for the equipment and speakers they carry.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
- You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
Before we arrive
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Note the size of each box and speaker
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.
Do not let clutter build up against the unit’s vents.
