TV and media units in Becontree

Cables are the part most people want to hide. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. People usually come to us about somewhere to keep games tidy and a TV that looks out of place in the room, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Becontree, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line them up again.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf. Give each its own space.

Living-room storage in Becontree

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Becontree were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 76%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Becontree, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Barking and Dagenham has its own. Depending on your street in Becontree, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Chadwell Heath station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
