TV and media units for your home in East Dulwich

Is it time for TV and media units?

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned and holds books and everyday things as well.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Champion Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

About our TV and media units in East Dulwich

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in East Dulwich, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If you are living with space for a soundbar and speakers and clutter around the TV, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

With a large share of homes around East Dulwich built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in East Dulwich. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Dulwich?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

What if I buy a larger TV?

If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. Tell us the size you have in mind.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket, which we look at during the design visit.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

Living-room carpentry in East Dulwich: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around East Dulwich were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 12%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of East Dulwich is within about a quarter of a mile of the Camberwell Grove Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the neighbourhood around East Dulwich, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If your home is one of the older houses near The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Brunswick Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

East Dulwich is part of the London Borough of Southwark. We design and make TV and media units for homes in East Dulwich and the rest of Southwark, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across Southwark.

Here we cover the SE5, SE22 and SE15 postcode area for TV and media units. Our area takes in homes on streets like Rye Lane, Wren Road and Adys Road, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. East Dulwich sits close to the A2214 and A2215, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Nearby, we also make TV and media units in Denmark Hill (1 mile north-west), Herne Hill (1 mile south-west), Dulwich Village (1 mile south), Camberwell (1 mile north) and Peckham (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of Southwark, our area takes in Bermondsey (2 miles north), Elephant and Castle (2 miles north), Bankside (3 miles north), Southwark (3 miles north), St George's Fields (3 miles north) and Newington Butts (2 miles north). East Dulwich is one of the larger places we cover in Southwark.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
