Questions from Surrey Quays

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Surrey Quays?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you cover homes near Surrey Quays station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The unit is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

What happens during the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

TV and media units for homes in Surrey Quays

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in. If you’re living with clutter around the TV and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, TV and media units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A large number of homes around Surrey Quays date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes tend to have open-plan living rooms with no chimney breast. So TV and media units often give the room its shape, along a full wall or around the TV. Plasterboard stud walls are common in newer homes, so heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Do you need TV and media units in Surrey Quays?

Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

For a flat near Surrey Quays station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Living-room storage in Surrey Quays

In the neighbourhood around Surrey Quays, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 42%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Surrey Quays include The Terrace (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east, and Tide Gauge House on South Quay of Greenland Lock (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That typically means a van in Surrey Quays needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If your children go to Rotherhithe Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. For an older house near St Katharine with St Bartholomew, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

The unit arrives already finished. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so clean them now and then. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.
