TV and media units in Southwark: how it works
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Southwark, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are speakers muffled behind doors and a tangle of wires behind the TV.
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
- We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.
How our quotes work
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Getting a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

TV and media units across Southwark: local notes
Some living rooms across Southwark are long knocked-through rooms; others are compact flats where one wall has to hold everything. Either way, TV and media units are planned around how the room is used day to day. The finish is agreed with you, spray-painted or hand-painted.
The biggest shares of homes in Southwark were built since 2000 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 28% of homes in Southwark were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes normally have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so TV and media units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. About 64% of households in Southwark live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Homes across Southwark range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
East Dulwich: For an older house near The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live near Brunswick Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
Honest limits
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Plastering or decorating around the unit
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind.
What to check before you book
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- The overall size of the piece
- How square the room is
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
These details help when you contact us:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.
What it’s made from
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Common questions about TV and media units
How do you hide the TV cables?
We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and access panels. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, so it helps to plan sockets with your electrician.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Do you cover Southwark?
Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, Southwark included.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.
How long does it take to fit a TV unit?
The time on site depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
