TV and media units in Bounds Green
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. If your home has games, controllers and remotes everywhere and boxes and consoles on the floor, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
With a large share of homes around Bounds Green built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

TV and media units for homes in Bounds Green
About 56% of the homes in the area around Bounds Green went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Bounds Green, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 56% of homes in the neighbourhood around Bounds Green were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as St Leonard's House (judge Fuller's Almshouses), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Bruce Castle, about 2.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near O. R. Tambo Recreation Ground, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Could you do it yourself?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
How we price TV and media units
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking and unloading on your street
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How big the furniture is
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.
What to send when you get in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Examples of the look you are after
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.
Preparing the room
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Arranging a design visit
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Common questions about TV and media units
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bounds Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Bounds Green?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What are your TV and media units made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
